How to Style a Boubou, Three Ways

The boubou is the most generous garment in any Nigerian wardrobe, and generosity is exactly what makes it so easy to style badly. The trick is to decide, before you leave the house, where the structure is going to come from.
One — belt it. A slim leather or self-fabric belt at the natural waist turns volume into silhouette instantly. Keep the shoe simple: a bare sandal or a pointed mule.
Two — let it fall, and load the ears. With no belt, all the definition should come from above the shoulders. Sculptural gold earrings, hair up, a strong lip. Nothing else.
Three — layer it. A boubou over a narrow column slip reads as couture rather than ease. This is the version we send clients to evening events in.
Whatever you do, do not add a second voluminous piece. The boubou is the statement. Everything else is punctuation.
